Title I Program
What's available if your child needs help with reading and writing?
Our school is committed to the goal that ALL CHILDREN WILL READ AND
WRITE BY THE END OF THIRD GRADE. For a few first graders who need support
to make the same progress as their peers, we have the Reading Recovery
Program. Through Reading Recovery, children get one-to-one help every
day for 30 minutes. Most children get on grade level in reading and writing
within 18 weeks and don't need extra help again.
For older students, we offer one-to-one and small group help with specially
trained teachers. These services are offered through Title I, a federally
funded program. Because of recent funding cuts, student receive help
on a prioritized bases. The school supports early prevention, so most
services are in the earliest grades. Not all students who need help are
able to get it.
How can parents help their children at home? Parents can help their
children by reading with them and/or listening to them read for a few
minutes each day. Gifts of books encourage reading. Seeing parents read
reinforces the need for the pleasure of reading. Read signs, labels,
and directions aloud. Limit the amount of television watching and encourage
conversation.
How can parents be involved with Title I? Call me, Nina Church, the
Title I teacher at 586-9671 if you would like to talk about your child's
program. I also invite you to visit the school and observe what is going
on. You can attend meetings and parent conferences.
