Mentoring

Mentoring is active on three levels at Craftsbury: student to student, community adult to student, Sterling College student to student. The student program is directed by Sue Brown and involves our present junior class. One day a month, the juniors go to the elementary school to tutor students and to supervise activities, such as recess. These students have received training as tutors through VSAC (Vermont Student Assistance Corporation). Both groups win through this activity: the elementary students look forward to the visits of the "older kids", and the self esteem of the high school students is greatly heightened by working with the younger students. The adult mentoring program is directed by Mrs. Paula Masse. Approximately fifteen community members come into our school once a week to work with various students. They sometimes tutor students and often engage the students in other activities such as walking, toss and catch, and crafts. For many of these students, this significant adult becomes a trusted friend. The last program links Sterling College students with primarily middle level students for tutoring purposes. The Craftsbury students often have difficulty completing homework and projects. The college students can tap into their own experiences to assist our students.

Mentoring provides community outreach and solid support to numerous students. It is an important part of Craftsbury’s story.
