Welcome to the Craftsbury Schools Fifth & Sixth Grade Classes.

Course Information:

Language Arts (Grades 5 & 6)—Syllabus (Word format)
Language Arts is communication. The purpose of learning language arts concepts, skills, and content is to enable us to be life long learners, to participate in the exchange of oral and written language for information and pleasure, and to think critically. This is accomplished by providing all students with a rich and supportive learning environment in which all students are given the opportunities to experience and practice writing, listening, and speaking in developmentally appropriate ways on a daily basis. Students best learn language arts when actively engaged in the processes of listening, speaking, writing, and thinking in all curriculum area. Language arts concepts, skills, and content are best learned in a developmental sequence, which integrates these processes.

Reading (Grades 5 & 6)—Syllabus (Word format)
Reading instruction in fifth and sixth grades is accomplished through a literature-based program. Students learn and practice skills while reading books of different genres. Sustained silent reading is an integral part of our daily program, including personal weekly goal setting and teacher conferences.

Social Studies (Grade 5 & 6) —Syllabus (Word format)
It is the purpose of Social Studies to provide students with the knowledge, values, and skills to become productive, involved citizens of the world. Social Studies provides better understanding of historical and current events, cultures and geography. Social Studies prepares our students to make decisions that will contribute to the betterment of our local and global communities.

Social Studies in the 5th & 6th grades focuses on the geography and history of the United States of America. My emphasis is to engage the students as much as possible in reliving the past and applying what we have learned from the past to the present and the future. I use simulations whenever appropriate to strengthen the motto:
" Tell me, I forget, Show me, I remember, Involve me, I understand."

Science (Grade 5 & 6)—Syllabus (Word format)
Science in grades five and six includes the study of living and non-living things. Students will study such topics as animal classification, basic physics and chemistry, sound and light, and human body systems. Learning is acquired through an activity-based program in which students construct science concepts and solve problems through inquiry and exploration.
