C.A.P.E/Hiking Program

The C.A.P.E. (Craftsbury Academy Physical Education) program and the Craftsbury Schools Hiking program are school-wide programs. Faculty members, administrators and community volunteers lead and mentor a variety of activities. The C.A.P.E. program is offered between 4 and 8 times per year. Students choose from a wide selection of activities and participate for a period between three and four hours each outing

The hiking program is organized by class. Students in each grade, K-12, hike a different mountain with their classmates on a yearly basis. Mountains are hiked in order by degree of difficulty. It is possible for a Craftsbury student to hike thirteen different mountains if he/she attends Craftsbury Schools for his/her entire educational experience.

C.A.P.E. Program Objectives:

  • Provide students with a variety of life long recreational/sports activities that cannot be provided in a normal curriculum due to facilities and scheduling.
  • Provide opportunities for rural Craftsbury students to participate in activities that are more available to students from wealthy backgrounds or wealthy schools systems.
  • Improve student self-esteem by providing challenging activities in which students can see self-improvement.
  • Improve faculty/administration/student interactions and relationships through sharing experiences that are different from the normal class setting.
  • Stimulate student to pursue an active lifestyle after graduation by educating them about life-long recreational/sports activities that are available on a seasonal basis in Vermont.
  • Involve community volunteers in order to improve the school and community relationship.
  • Improve school climate.
