Craftsbury Academy, founded in 1829 — Craftsbury Common, Vermont

National Honor Society

This has been an active year for the NHS.  Once again we held a second Food Drive around Thanksgiving in addition to the traditional Holiday Food drive, adopted a family at Christmas, and added a Drop 'n' Swap for clothing and sports equipment.  NHS members faithfaully provided tutoring service and oversaw funds for Katrina Relief in the beginning of the year.  In December NHS members joined with the fifth and sixth graders and visited the residents.  On Valentines Day NHS members returned to the Care Center and shared readings and treats with the residents.  Spring plans include working with the Village Improvement Society to spruce up the Common.  Members  stand ready to assist the community and welcome requests.

"The emblem of this society is the keystone and the flaming torch.  The keystone bears at its base the letters CSLS, which stands for the four cardinal principles of the organization:  character, scholarship, leadership and service.  As the keystone is placed by the builder to hold the perfect arch in perpetual stability, so the structure of our education must be held firm and true to the purpose of life by the virtues represented to this symbol.  To bear forward the searching light of truth, to learn that others may follow in light, to keep burning in our school a high ambition for the enduring values of life, and to serve- these purposes are symbolized in this torch."
