Elementary School ELF Program
The ELF (environmental learning for the future)
program is a monthly hands-on environmental program that reaches to
the K-4 children in the
Craftsbury Schools. This year we are exploring the theme of cycles.
In September we examined how insects survive through the year by going
through
different stages. October’s session was learning how a tree functions
and in November we learned how ingenious seeds are in dispersing.
During the rest of the school year we will study galls, winter twigs,
bird songs,
the inside of flowers and the way dandelions survive in their challenging
world. Community volunteers are the key component to making this education
enrichment program happen in our schools. The cost of running this
program is around $1,400 a year.
The Craftsbury Elementary School Elf program in partnership with Sterling
College will be providing a post race lunch for the skiers in the Craftsbury
Marathon on Saturday January 28th, 2006. Volunteers are needed to help
with this event. We should be able to raise enough funds in this one
event to cover our costs for the ELF program for the year. Please contact
Allison Van Akkeren at 586-7711 ext. 140 if you will be able to help
out.
The lunch will be served from 12:30 p.m. until 4:30 p.m. Slots for volunteers
include 12:00 noon to 3:00 p.m. or 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. shift to serve the
food, clean up, care for volunteer children etc. (these times or the
date of the race may shift depending on snow conditions). There is also
a need for help to make the cornbread and coleslaw on Thursday January
26th beginning at 6:30 p.m. and cookies earlier in the month. Large food
donations are also welcome. We could especially benefit from a donation
of ground beef for the chili that we serve.
